Rising Stars in contention despite tough Sandown
CAMS Rising Star drivers Matthew Brabham and Garry Jacobson remain in contention for the 2010 Victorian Formula Ford Championship crown, despite a tough weekend amidst a star-studded field at Sandown. With a round of the National Championship scheduled for the Melbourne circuit later in the year, many of the country’s premiere Formula Ford drivers made one-off state level appearances at the weekend in order to gain more Sandown experience. While the likes of National front runners Ash Walsh and Nick Foster were always destined to take the spoils, the Rising Stars remained focussed on their championship aspirations.
By the end of the three hard fought races, the championship battle had closed up such that the top four drivers are now separated by just six points.Brabham managed to finish inside the top ten for the round at Sandown, and drops just one spot to third in the standings – now only two points from the lead. The 16 year old’s weekend included a high of seventh place in Race 2, after a difficult qualifying session in the wet on Saturday saw all four Rising Stars Spectrums start the first race from outside the top ten. “It was a very tough round, the whole field was very competitive” said Brabham. “We had 34 cars on track, and a whole heap of really experienced National championship guys in the field.
“After our disappointing qualifying, it was important that we focused on scoring as many points as we could in the races, and not worry so much about the guys just coming in for one round. “We raced hard and managed to break into the top ten for the weekend, so we can be happy about that.”
Erstwhile points leader Jacobson now sits fourth in the standings, despite a double DNF at Sandown.
The Shepparton driver showed great pace in Saturday morning’s dry practice session, setting the sixth fastest time, but suffered a change in fortunes when the rain came in the afternoon. Jacobson qualified down in 16th position, and failed to finish Races 1 and 3 – the latter due to an unfortunate incident with team-mate Jack Le Brocq at Turn 1. The crash also ended Le Brocq’s weekend, which had started promisingly with a 10th in Race 1. Having starred in the last two National rounds, the 18 year old was making his first appearance in the Victorian Championship.
The most impressive Rising Star at Sandown was Liam Sager, who emerged with fifth overall for the round. The Queenslander moved up from 12th on the grid to eighth in Race 1, before finishing sixth in the two Sunday races. Team principal Bruin Beasley praised the maturity of Sager after the event. “Liam’s really impressed everyone this weekend – running that high up the order in such a competitive field is a very good effort. “He showed great maturity, in both wet and dry conditions, and has proven that he has stepped up to another level as a driver since the last Victorian Championship round here at Sandown in May. “Overall I’m pleased that, although our lack of qualifying speed hurt our chances for top results, both Garry and Matthew are still well in contention for the championship.”

Mark returned from Rally Queensland with a Great Result, 5th out right in the Australian Rally Championship.
Event started on Thursday in the pouring rain as Mark did reconnaissance making the clay based road extremely slippery, Friday the sun shined as we did media day and shakedown on bitumen stage.
Friday night the event proper started with 2 special stages in a industrial park, after those stages we were 4th outright, 3 seconds behind Simon Evans who went on to win the event.
Saturday Mark had covered over 140km of competitive stages in extremely difficult conditions, some dry, some wet and slippery, some stages very fast up 180kmh then into tight overgrown rainforest type roads. By Saturday night I think we were about 6-7th outright.
Sunday, having some knowledge of the stages Mark attacked having a great run up through the field and eventually finished 5th outright. No dramas, the car ran faultlessly competing for over 270km of special stages.
The Bygone Autos prepared Triumph TR7 V8 of Mark Parsons and Mal Clark completed a clean sweep of the Classic Class and Category as well as finishing 1st 2 wheel drive, 1st V8 and 5th overall on the recent 2 day Targa Rotorua Tarmac Rally held in the winter month of June over 300 kilometres of high speed closed stages .
The 1978 Factory built rally car has enjoyed good fortune competing on Tarmac racing and rallying for many years, but after a recent rest of 4 years for the car, the crew were keeping a lid on their expectations.
Despite a very wet and slippery event, the Penrite equipped TR7 ran faultlessly proving once again that a well prepared car using the best equipment and lubricants offers the greatest formula for success.
Penrite Oil is a proud sponsor of Ausdeck Racing.
Ausdeck Racing will release their 2010 / 2011 racing schedule soon which will see the Team travel Nationally again this year. Ausdeck Racing will base themselves once again from their Brisbane Race Shop but intend on contesting a similar schedule to last year's racing.
More news to come shortly.

The BEMW Rally Team has returned after another successful race at Cowra last weekend. Despite several ‘notable incidents’, both car and team performed strongly to secure an impressive result of 3rd Outright Open (/1st RWD).
Only two weeks prior to the race, it appeared funding issues would keep BEMW out of the Pipe King Cowra Shire Rally. However, with the generous support of John Mills from Kumho Motorsport Tyres – who supplied 4 new tyres for the race – and some other local support the team made it to the event to contest their place as reigning champions.
The competitive stages mainly took place on shire roads, which are known for their firmer surface and more open, flowing style. Along with this comes the promise of more speed – something that became evident as the BEMW team posted averages speeds of more than 130 km/h in four of the stages.
True to form, the car ran very reliably. The only minor issue was the passenger side window not shutting completely, meaning the car subsequently filled with dust. This forced Mark to remove his glasses, which found their way onto the floor where they interfered with his feet. Approaching a corner at 170 km/h, Mark was unable to react in time and sent the car into a slide across the long grass, narrowly missing a fence. His analysis of the situation afterwards was typically dry:
‘We weren’t going too fast, the corner was just the wrong angle.’
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTpIqpcPDFo&feature=player_embedded
Another near-catastrophe occurred when the team was confronted with a reckless local driving the wrong way up one of the closed rally roads during a competitive stage. Coming over a rise at almost 170km/h in their BMW, Mark and Matt were confronted with an old Daihatsu Charade doing approximately 50km/h in the opposite direction. Concerned for the safety of the drivers following him (and for the driver in the offending vehicle), Mark slowed down and radioed an alert to race control. Fortunately, no incidents occurred despite the man stubbornly continuing on his way up the road all the way to the starting point, although the team lost a significant amount of time as a result.
Finally, a spin on Stage 7 saw the BMW shoot backwards into the scrub after loose gravel on the corner failed to provide the expected grip. Once again, there were no injuries to car or drivers so the BMW continued on its way having lost just over 10 seconds of time. Interestingly, this was approximately the margin between the 3rd placed BEMW team and the 2nd placed team, while the event winners finished with a 19-second lead.

Mitchell Ends Year In Top End
The 2009/10 Sprintcar season has officially come to an end for the Queensland based Mitchell Motorsports Team after wrapping up their racing program at the 2010 Australian Sprintcar Championship at Darwin’s Northline Speedway. Unfortunately the weekend didn’t go to plan with Team Driver Ricky Mitchell involved in an early race incident during the 15 lap B-Main on the Sunday night resulting the in the Eagle Ignition Leads finishing the year on the infield.
“To finish the Australian Championship on the infield was very disappointing but it would have been extremely tough to make the A from where we were starting. When Brooke (Tatnell) is the final transfer into a final you know it is a tough field” added Team Driver Ricky Mitchell.
“Overall the Title weekend was a great experience for me and the entire team. The Northline Speedway was a fantastic venue; the natural amphitheatre reminded me a lot of Murray Bridge. It was just a shame we were chasing our tail all weekend with the car set up. The car was loose all weekend and I like a tight race car. We finally got it pretty good in our final heat on Sunday and I really think the car would have been good in the B-main but we never got to find out”.
“Before I forget I really must congratulate James (McFadden) on winning the Australian Championship, he drove really well all weekend’.
With the season now officially over Ricky was able to reflect back on his season and overall he was pretty happy with the way the Team moved forward this year. “Other than the last three shows which resulted in three DNF’s I think we have really moved forward this year. The crew did a fantastic job, Dad gave me everything I needed to race near the front, and as a driver I felt more relaxed which really helped me behind the wheel. Although we haven’t really spoken about next year I am really looking forward to having another good year and I am really hoping that we can get down to Warrnambool to contest next years Australian Title” he added with enthusiasm
Chapmans Offroad Racing Team Bring Home Two Firsts from Hyden WA
The first round of the Australian Offroad Racing Championship held over the Easter weekend in Hyden WA, is done and dusted.
After racing the grueling 450 km, Clayton & Adam found themselves in first place in production 4WD in their Triton. This was no easy feat on their part. They prologued quickest in class on Saturday and started well. However after only 15 kms into the fist lap the clutch throw out bearing failed which meant that although they had drive, Clayton wasn’t able to use the clutch to change gears. So he very quickly learnt how to change gears without a clutch, just using the right engine revs. The pit crew removed the gear box on Sat night to try to rectify the problem to no avail. So it was up to the start line on Sunday morning, wait for the green light and take off in gear on the starter motor. Into the first lap on Sun the transfer lever went into neutral, so they had to pull over, remove the gear sticks, rectify the problem and replace the gear sticks and then continue on with the race. They were determined to get to the finish. The final 2 laps of 160 kms were great, even though the track was deteriorating they managed to come in with good lap times.
Rob who raced his Pajero in extreme 4wd class, said the boys deserve a medal to be able to race the Triton without a clutch in the times they were achieving. The track was one of the toughest tracks he has raced on.
Rob & Ross also came home with a first in Extreme 4WD in their Pajero. They prologued well and had a great run in the first lap on Sat. After 30 kms into the 2nd lap the front diff broke, meaning they only had 2 wheel drive. After a quick stop & check, at the end of day 1 they found themselves trailing behind Colin Hunter the current Extreme 4WD champion in his Jeep, by only 10secs.
So with some rear shock adjustments for traction they fronted up to the line on Sunday keen to catch up the 10secs. After an exciting race in 2wd at the end of the weekend they succeeded and came first in class, winning by more than 5 minutes. Rob said his new engine performed like a dream.
The vehicles are now being prepared for a couple of local rounds before heading out to Alice Springs for the Finke Desert Race in June.
Nitro Funny Car Challenge at the Kwinana Motorplex on 26th December, 2009
After a strong burnout, on the first pass the car went up in tyre-smoke and a bit of shake and did a 9.49 as he had to get off it almost immediately.
The second pass was better, but again he was having vision problems and recorded a 7.17, but the last pass was much better with a 6.287 at 195.65mph (314.86kph). But again vision problems marred the run with his glasses
fogging up and he actually couldn't see at all! The run was looking beautiful and straight, the motor was strong but you have to be able to see!
All in all it was a great result and this was Fergie's debut at drag racing. It was also a debut for a few of our new Pit Crew members who did an absolutely awesome job to turn the car around in the allocated time. We were proud of all of them - Fergie and the team.
Well done to all.
Brisbane International Speedway – USA Night 1 - 30 December 2009
In a field that was comprised of some of the best drivers in Queensland and a couple of American stars, Steve started the night really well, time trialling in the second group of hot laps and recording a 12.523 second lap. His solid time was enough to see him qualify seventh overall, with team-mate Tim Garrett also doing well to sit in fifteenth place at the conclusion of the time trials session.
In each of their heats both Steve and Tim acquitted themselves exceptionally well.
Steve started his first heat from position four and quickly slipped into third position, but was back to fourth when American Brent Kaeding worked his way past on the opening lap. Steve chased Kaeding, searching for a way past, while Kaeding tried to find a way past Des Collier. With three laps barely on the board Kaeding pulled infield (with engine trouble), leaving Steve to chase after and battle it out with Des Collier, while Allan Woods challenged Steve from behind. Woods had a look up the inside of Steve in turns one and two, before Steve was able to run away a little and get a couple of car lengths advantage. Steve eventually caught Des Collier, and, with only a couple of laps left to run, slipped straight past Collier in turn two, to officially finish second.
In his second heat Steve started out of position three alongside Peter Thorley and with American Brent Kaeding right on his tail. Steve got a good start and sat in third for the first corner and a half, until Peter Thorley relegated Steve to fourth, and left him to try to hold off the advances of Brent Kaeding. Thorley was looking for a way past Matthew Butler, while Steve was looking for a way past both Thorley and Butler, and Kaeding was trying to go around the outside of them all. Kaeding had a mistake in turn four and dropped back a couple of car lengths, giving Steven a fraction of breathing room. Next lap around though Steve slipped straight past Butler in turn four, in a magnificently timed pass on the low line, and opened a small but comfortable margin over Butler by the end of the straight. He set out after Peter Thorley, closed the gap to a car length or two and was searching for a way past when the chequered flag flew. Steve was third.
Tim started from the front row in both his heats, took the win in the first and finished second in his next heat despite getting the jump on the start and leading for most of the race. American racer Jesse Hockett proved too powerful in the closing stages of the race, and took over the race lead, relegating Tim to second.
Steve was fifth highest points scorer of the evening heading into the Dash event. In the Pre-Dash draw Steve got a little lucky and pulled four, starting the Dash event, from the outside of the second row, with American Jesse Hockett out of three. Steve raced wheel-to-wheel two abreast with Hockett for the first three quarters of the opening lap, before Hockett got the advantage and Steve settled into fourth. He bounced through some rather large ruts in turns one and two, but managed to keep it all together to finish fourth, and start the A-Main alongside Hockett once again.
Steve started the A-Main from position four, with Tim doing a brilliant job to qualify 10th! We were very happy with that – we wanted to take home two straight cars – but both Steve and Tim had other ideas, and were determined to bring home some impressive results as well.
When the A-Main got under way Steve settled into fourth, with Brent Kaeding right on his tail, but hit a rut in turn two and bounced to the highline, letting Kaeding slip past on the low line. Steve recovered, and only lost two positions (one to Kaeding and one to Peter Thorley). Steve, now running in sixth, set about trying to get back past Thorley, and opened a sizable lead over seventh place. Thorley slipped past David Muir, while Steve bided his time, waiting for his opportunity to do the same. Muir ran wide in turn four, trying to take Thorley on the outside, while Steve tried to get past them both down low. Thorley managed to stay in front, with Steve slipping past Muir on the exit of the turn and set out after Thorley. A few yellow light stoppages later and Steve was up to position five, with Tim in seventh. Before long Kaeding lost his front end and brought out the yellows once more, elevating Steve to fourth. Now right on the tail of Thorley, and so close to a podium finish he could almost taste it, with five laps to go, it got interesting. Thorley, in third, got a little crossed up in turn two, and while Steve tried his best to avoid contact, he clipped the rear end of Thorley’s car, damaging the front wing and front nerf bar. Steve was lucky not to roll, and in a show of horsepower, wheel-standed out of turn two. Steve was up to third, but now had American Bud Kaeding on his tail. Steve did a magnificent job to hold on to his first podium finish of the season, while Tim finished fifth – a career best for him - making it a wonderful finish to the night for the White Family / Brisbane Foundry Racing team.

Best standing start quarter mile time - 8.11 seconds at 166MPH ( 265 KMH )
Owner/rider – Ian Wilkins "The oil (SIN15) is required to perform through stresses of a wet centrifugal clutch adding debris to the oil every run down the track, coupled with immense force on the bearings from the extra cylinder pressures generated by the nitrous. The heat generated alone so suddenly with all this force being unleashed is the test of any oil. The SIN15 excels in every way.Bearings are lasting a full season, and still look good enough to run at the end of each season, being replaced only as part of a routine now, rather than a more regular necessity as it was before. The valve gear is lasting exceptionally well, with longer valve spring life and no cam and follower problems, which we used to experience too".
Latest achievements for the bike is fastest bike in New Zealand at every race meeting attended by the team during the 2008-2009 season, breaking the MPH record for supercharged dragbike at Meremere in February this year.
We continued on at the end of the New Zealand season, travelling to Australia and competing in the Trans Tasman Dragbike Challenge, beating the Australians after racing at them at Alice Springs Inland Dragway, and Hidden Valley Dragstrip in Darwin.
Next season the new bike will be unleashed. Canadian Geoff Pollard previously rode the turbocharged methanol burning bike to a world record 6.61 second quarter mile at 211 MPH ( 337 KMH )
18th April Media release : Matty Brabham wins 1st Race
Matthew Brabham kick started his racing career with his first win at Round 1 of the Victorian State Championship held at the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit today. Driving his CAMS Rising Star / Minda Motorsports Spectrum Brabham fought off his competitors to win the final race by just 0.0516 in dramatic style.
Brabham who had qualified 3rd on Saturday, had a 3rd, 5th and a 1st in the three races to take the overall win, and now takes a 5 point lead in the Victorian Championship to the next round at the Sandown circuit on May 23rd. He also posted the fastest lap of the day in the final race.
“It was an awesome day of racing, in all the races you never knew who was going to win until the flag fell, but the most important race is the last one as it counts for more points in the Championship and it was a very special feeling for me to get my first win”. Matthew enthused after.
Brabham’s week end was not without a few problems, a malfunctioning electronic handbrake made the starts very difficult in the first two races, and trip through the grass in the second race all added up to a 5th place start in the final race. The final was a real battle and the 4 leading drivers put on a real show for the fans with constant lead changes and daring passes. The final lap was anybodies race but Brabham managed to get to the flag first and score a memorable win.
“The team did a great job today, we fixed my problem with the starts and the last setup change made the car the fastest it had been all week end. In fact I my fastest lap in race 3 was quicker than my qualifying lap. So a big thanks to them and to my sponsors for their support for making all this possible”. Matthew said.
Today’s results can be seen at www.natsoft.com.au/cgi-bin/results.cgi?18/04/2010.PHIL . Matthew’s next race is Round two of the National Formula Ford Championship on May 2nd at Queensland Raceway.
Humpy Racing puts in a strong performance at Willowbank!
Humpy Racing put in a strong performance at Willowbank Raceway on Saturday for the latest Nostalgia Drag Racing round. This was the first event for the Team in the 09/10 Nostalgia Drag Racing season, after electing to sit out the first half of the season to focus their efforts on building a second nostalgia drag racing car.
In spite of the absence from the track the Humpy Racing Holden FX was strong right off the trailer, running a 9.28/145mph in the first qualifying session. This time was backed up in session two with a 9.29/145mph. The third qualifying session was cancelled by event organisers after a number of delays due to rain and track clean-ups. After two quick and consistent qualifying passes the Humpy Racing Team couldn’t wait for racing to begin. Competing in the Gas class, which runs on a Chicago shootout basis (best of three rounds), guaranteed the Team plenty of opportunity to show the crowd just what the methanol powered Holden FX was capable of.
By the time the first round was held the sun had begun to dip and the track had begun to cool, which did not seem to suit the car setup quite as well as the earlier conditions. In spite of this Humpy Racing owner and driver Rob Brown
ran a 9.37 on a 9.29 dial-in to take the win. The second round saw another dominant performance from the Team, with the Holden FX taking the win with a 9.36 on the formerly nominated dial-in. Humpy Racing was also triumphant in
the third and final round running a 9.42 for the win.
After three rounds Humpy Racing was among the small number of Gas teams who had won all of their races. This meant that officials had to look closely at the times of each of the competitors on their last run and after doing so Humpy
Racing was deemed to have effectively come third, thus narrowly missing out on contesting the final.
Nevertheless it was a strong performance and Rob Brown and the Humpy Racing Team were both pleased and proud of their consistency and three round wins. Humpy Racing would like to thank their sponsors, supporters and crew who made this impressive result possible.

On the 20th of February we had the 6th round of our GWN modified series at Bunbury speedway. I had never been to Bunbury before so it was a good experience! Having never been there before I took the wrong type of tyres. I took tires too soft and the track was like sandpaper and wore tires away really quickly. I didn’t have too bad heats and out of the 21 nominations I qualified 12th for the final. As I went out the gate for the final I lost all my brakes as a brake line split so I did the whole feature with no brakes and finished 11th. On the 3rd of April we had the 7th round of the series at Albany speedway. I was hoping to do well here as it was at my home track but unfortunately my engine blew a head gasket before I even got out the gate for hot laps! So I was a spectator all night unfortunately. On the 16th and 17th of April we had the final two rounds of the series in a double header with Esperance Friday night and Kalgoorlie Saturday night. At esperance my car went well getting two 3rds and a 5th with a flat tire. I started from 10th in the final but on the first corner got a hit from behind and went back to 13th but managed to get up to 7th by the end of the 20 lap final. The next night at Kalgoorlie wasn’t so crash hot. Before racing I found that I had a broken panhard bar mount so we had to weld it up the best we could at the track. I didn’t do as well in the heats here as the bigger horsepower cars got away from me on the drivey surface. I started out of position 11 in the final and was holding my position when the earth lead came loose on the engine and the car started missing so I didn’t finish the final. At the end of the series I finished 14th out of 28 cars that participated in the series throughout. I also scored top points for the rookie of the year modified in the series. I have sold my car and am building a new BF falcon and I am expecting to have it at the track for the first meeting of next season which will be in November some time.
