The Whelan Bros Racing team consists of two brothers Campbell age 13 and Darcy age 10. In 2017 they were also joined by their younger sister Emily who is 8 and racing in Cadet 9. The boys love for the sport has rubbed off on their little sister and she was keen to join them on the track this year. All three drive Italian made Haase Karts in KA4 Junior Light, Cadet 12 and Cadet 9 respectively.
In 2018 we would like to give the team every opportunity to compete against the best drivers in Australia as often as possible. With the support of our sponsors, family and pit crews we are hoping to compete both here in Tasmania and on the mainland at Victorian race events.
2017 Season Review
Whelan Bros Racing has had another successful season of go kart racing in 2017. Both Campbell and Darcy moved up classes, facing new challenges and learning a lot about themselves and their karts throughout the year. The boys younger sister, Emily also joined the team in February making her Karting debut.
Campbell started the season with a bang taking out 2nd Place in the McDonalds Young Guns Race meeting, against competitors who had previously raced in this category before. Campbell's first competitive run in his new Haase Junior kart, proved he has the skills to race with the big boys in the very competitive Junior Light Class. Campbell also competed in the Tasmanian Statewide Series, over four rounds throughout the year, placing 1st in Smithton, 2nd in Burnie, 4th in Hobart and 3rd in Launceston. Mid Year, saw the very popular Twin Track Challenge run in Hobart. Campbell started the weekend at the back of the grid, due to an issue during qualifying and managed to work his way to the front to win the 1st Place Trophy and also receive the prestigious Ian Harrington memorial Rising Star Award. In September he was lucky enough to travel to Melbourne to the Junior Sprint Race meeting at the Eastern Lions Kart Club. This is where Junior drivers go to race against the best in Australia. Campbell had a fantastic weekend here, running in the top 10 all weekend, but an early collision in the last heat, left him off the track and he was placed on the last grid position in the final. Campbell used his grit and determination to work his way through the very competitive field to finish a very respectable 14th. Campbell capped off the year by taking out the Southern Tasmanian Kart Club, Club Title for 2017 in KA4 Junior Light.
Darcy started the season in the first round of the Tasmanian Statewide Series in Smithton early in February. Racing for the first time in his new Class, Cadet 12, Darcy had a successful weekend finishing in 3rd position. He also placed 2nd in the Hobart round and 5th in the Launceston round. Darcy and his Dad, had a competition to grow their hair during the 2016/17 race seasons to raise money for the Tasmanian Cancer Council. Both Darcy and his Dad, grew mullets and raised money at each race meeting they attended. Darcy held a Crazy Hair Day at his school raising over $700 to the worthy cause. In May, The Whelan Bros Big Shave, came to an end when they both lost their mullets. The total money raised for the Tasmanian Cancer Council was $1732 and we cannot thank the Tasmanian Karting community enough for their support during this fundraiser. In September, Darcy also joined his brother Campbell at the Eastern Lions Kart Club for the Junior Sprint. Darcy had a fantastic weekend, racing against some of the best Cadet 12 drivers in Australia and finished the weekend in Third Place. A top effort against some very experienced drivers. Darcy also finished off the Karting year by taking out the Southern Tasmanian Kart Club, Club Title for 2017 in Cadet 12.
Emily made her open race meeting debut in February at Round 2 of the Tasmanian Statewide Series in Burnie. Emily had done a few club days before this race, but this was her first time on the Burnie track. She drove extremely well and got faster and faster with each lap. She finished the weekend in 4th place and also finished 5th in Hobart and 4th in the Launceston round. Emily also helped Darcy with the Crazy Hair day at their school raising money for the Tasmanian Cancer Council, competed at the Twin Track Challenge, finishing in 3rd and also completed in every Southern Tasmanian Kart Club, Club Day in 2017. Emily has improved with every race meeting and is gaining confidence each time she races. She also finished the last kart meeting of the year taking out the Southern Tasmanian Kart Club, Club Title for 2017 in Cadet 9.
At the 2017 Karting Tasmania Awards Night in December, Campbell, Darcy and Emily all received trophies for their overall places in the Tasmanian Statewide Series. This is worked out on an accumulation of points over the four rounds. Campbell was awarded 3rd in KA4 Junior Light, Darcy 2nd in Cadet 12 and Emily 3rd in Cadet 9. An extremely great achievement for these three young drivers.
Whelan Bros Racing & Sister are now looking forward to the 2018 season and gaining more skills and experience in Tasmania and Interstate.
